Welcome to the third challenge of the day for primary school children. These challenges are open-ended, purposeful tasks, differentiated for different abilities, that your child can enjoy every day. Please share your outcomes with the group to receive both teacher and peer feedback. Enjoy yourselves!
Today’s challenge is about collecting statistics. It’s also a chance for children to pay close attention to the world outside.
CREATE A TALLY OF OBSERVATIONS.
ALL: The idea is to count, record and analyse the what you can see outside. This might be on a walk or looking out of the window.
Preschoolers and Reception: Ask your child to think about what they might see outside. Tell them that you need to count what you see. Show the chart and allow your child to draw a picture of the items. Then help them to count them accurately. Show them how to make a tally mark. If they are able, let them write the final number in the chart.
Years 1 and 2: Follow the instructions as above, but this time show them how to show 5 in a tally chart. Why might this be useful? Can they count in fives?
Years 3, 4, 5 and 6: Collect the data accurately, using the tally system. Then present the information in the form of a graph – could be a pictogram or a bar chart. Write 3 statements about what they have found out.
Please don’t feel you have to stick to the year group options; let your child choose the option that best suits them. We’d love you to share the results online in our group for peer and teacher feedback. Enjoy!
